REAL LIFE MATHS FOR BUSY MUMS AND DADS

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

As a busy working mum, I know just how hard it is to make time to help your children with their school work. But helping doesn’t have to be too time consuming! Why not try some of the following activities whilst out and about:

Shopping

Involve your child when doing the weekly shop.

Ask them to write the shopping list and estimate how much each item may cost.

Total up your shopping as you put it in the trolley.

Round each price to the nearest £1 (i.e. an item that costs 79p would be rounded to £1) and estimate a total.

What would happen to the total if we had a £5.00 voucher to spend?

What offers can you see around the store?

What is the difference in price between a ‘named brand’ and a supermarket own brand?

What would happen if the prices increased by 10%?

What would happen if everything was half price?

How much change should I get if I paid with a £20 note?

Time

Use the TV guide to work out time spent watching certain programs.

Ask your child to work out arrival times based on how long the journey will take.

Timetables

Look at train or bus timetables together. How long would it take us to get to a place on the bus? On the plane? On the train?

Plan a trip to the Cinema. What time does the film start? How long is it? When will it finish?

How long will it take us to get there? When should we set off?

This one isn’t Maths based but it’s a lot of fun and really helps…

Spotting mistakes in Grammar and Punctuation

So often we see incorrect spellings, apostrophes and punctuation in everyday life. Play a game with your children. Who can spot the most mistakes?
